Caring for Your Mental Health During the Holidays
Not everyone is happy this time of year, and that is ok!
I hope that all of you had a lovely Thanksgiving with your families yesterday! But if you didn’t, that is understandable too. I have seen a lot of social media posts about families divided by politics this holiday season. With the US elections so recently past, it is understandable that many families are hurting right now.
This means, more of us than ever are struggling this holiday. For some of us, this is the norm. But for others, this is new ground we have never had to navigate before. Whatever the case, it is important to take time for self-care and your own mental health.
Make yourself the priority. If you’re unhappy and struggling, it’s hard to give the kids or anyone else a happy holiday.
Here are some tips I have put together for anyone who is struggling this holiday season:
Mental Health Holiday Survival Guide
In this article, I have provided links to the following topics:
Feeling triggered due to childhood abuse
Your family can’t force you to celebrate Christmas
Taking care of your mental health
Making time for self-care
If there are additional topics you would like me to cover during the month of December, let me know in the comments! Having a supportive community can make a huge impact in improving your mental health. Always know, you are not alone.
If you, or someone you love, is thinking about suicide, you can call the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline 24/7 by dialing 988. You can find text or chat options on their website as well.
When the holidays are difficult for you, it can feel easy to isolate yourself out of a sense of shame. I did that too, for many years. Not feeling happy at the holidays doesn’t make you a bad person, it just makes you human. Remember that and give yourself some extra love this holiday season. ❤️
