October is Domestic Violence Awareness month. And as someone who has been in an abusive relationship, I want to reach out and ask everyone that if someone comes to you and says that they are being abused, please believe them.
Believing survivors is one of the key elements to helping them get free. When I was in an abusive relationship, I went through so much shame and blame. People told me just not to make him angry. Like it was my fault that he was a violent person.
Here’s the thing though. Normal people don’t just go around hurting and destroying other people. It’s not like something just happened to make them snap. There is something wrong inside their brain that causes them to hurt other people.
It is never the victim’s fault.
If we can help to break down this hurtful stereotype in society, then we can help victims to seek out help without having so much fear of coming forward and not being believed.
If we break the silence and the stigma around domestic violence, then we can help a huge population that is suffering. Can you help me with this, friends? Can you help to raise awareness too?
You can read more about the facts and stats around domestic violence here on my blog.
October 2022 is National Domestic Violence Awareness Month
