Everyone wants to live a happy and healthy life, however there are millions of people all over the world who struggle with mental health conditions on a daily basis. In the month of May every year, Mental Health Awareness Month puts a spotlight on mental health. Learning about how mental health effects our daily lives, and the lives of those around us is the first step towards improving mental health efforts for all people.
According to the World Health Organization,
In 2019, 970 million people globally were living with a mental disorder, with anxiety and depression the most common.
Mental health conditions can cause difficulties in all aspects of life, including relationships with family, friends and community. They can result from or lead to problems at school and at work.
Globally, mental disorders account for 1 in 6 years lived with disability. People with severe mental health conditions die 10 to 20 years earlier than the general population. And having a mental health condition increases the risk of suicide and experiencing human rights violations.
Since mental health conditions have such a huge impact on the quality of life of so many people globally, focusing on how to improve mental health is key in creating a better society and a better world. It’s likely that you or someone you care about has a mental illness. This makes fostering understanding key.
One of the hardest things about having a mental health condition is the feelings of shame, stigma and isolation that it can cause. Many of us have a tendency to hide our mental health struggles, and this can make coping even more difficult. It’s much easier to have a good life with a mental illness if you have a strong support system.
Creating safe spaces for people to open up about their mental health goes a long way towards healing. To show the people in your life that you’re a safe person to talk to, you can participate in raising awareness throughout this month of May, and show a willingness to listen to the people in your life.
Listening without judgement is a key factor in showing your support for someone with a mental health condition. Understanding where they are coming from, asking how you can assist, and staying calm are all helpful. A lot of times, those of us with mental health issues just want to feel seen, heard and accepted. We want to know that the people in our life still care about us despite a mental health diagnosis, and that they are willing to stay by our side through the hard times.
Understandably, it can be difficult to be someone’s sole source of support. This is why therapy, life coaching and support groups are valuable tools as well. The more supportive people someone has in their life, the stronger they feel. Knowing you aren’t alone is one of the most valuable feelings on earth when it comes to mental health.
Resource Guides
If you don’t know a lot about mental health, have someone recently speak to you about theirs, or were recently diagnosed, it can seem overwhelming trying to find helpful information. Fortunately, there are many organizations that can provide help.
As someone with mental health conditions myself, I have researched extensively to find helpful resources to make available to my readers.
One of the first things to do when you have a mental health condition is to find a therapist or other mental health professional to work with. They have training and knowledge that can help you learn to cope with your mental health symptoms in healthy ways.

In addition to traditional therapies and learning coping skills, there are other ways you can change your life to improve your mental health. Some of the things that have worked the best for me are prioritizing self-care, making time for spiritual practices like mindfulness, meditation and yoga, and spending time outdoors when possible.
